The Pre-Collision System (PCS) from Toyota uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the potential for a collision ahead of a vehicle. As the driver closes the gap between them and the car in front of them, the system warns them to apply the brakes. Toyota calculated the likelihood of an accident occurring using real crash data, so the system can easily inform the driver as the chances of an accident escalate.
If the driver continues to close the gap with the vehicle in front of them, even after being warned several times, PCS from Toyota can instantly apply the vehicle's brakes with twice the force that an ordinary driver could normally assert. The result: PCS can slow a vehicle by roughly 9 to 18.5 miles per hour when the brakes need to be automatically applied.
Shore Toyota, serving the greater Mays Landing area, can't wait to see PCS make its way into production models in the near future. The big question on everyone's mind right now is what model exactly that will be. As Toyota puts the finishing touches on PCS, we're sure to hear more. That said, we'll update you the moment we know more.
