Toyota has been keenly interested in mobility support for years. Since 2011, the Toyota Sienna has featured an available Auto Access Seat -- the first factory-installed power rotating lift-up seat.

Many other forms of adaptive equipment are available through Toyota Mobility, many with reimbursement. However, Toyota isn't satisfied with improving mobility in the car.

The Human Support Robot (HSR) could provide valuable assistance to seniors, and others with limited mobility.

HSR is essentially a simple machine designed to pick things up. Its body telescopes to reach high shelves, and lowers to pick up objects from the ground. With great dexterity and smooth motions, it can grasp large objects, small objects, and even thin pieces of paper that may have slipped to the ground.

The simple ability to pick up hard-to-reach objects can be life changing for those with disabilities. Toyota has also opened a new company, the Toyota Research Institute in Silicon Valley, with the goal of speeding research into robotics, and even artificial intelligence.
