The big day is finally here -- Halloween. That one day of the year you stop being "you," and transform into an alien, a princess, a cultural icon, a monster, or anything your heart desires. Dressing up and eating candy is fun for kids, and it's fun for grown-ups, too.
Before we get to the revelry, however, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind.
Once the sky gets dark, it becomes nearly impossible to see pedestrians dressed in dark, spooky costumes. The NHTSA reports a significant increase in traffic fatalities involving pedestrians on Halloween, and offers the following tips:
Drivers -- go slow, and stay on alert.
Parents -- review safe street-crossing rules with your children.
Everyone -- use reflective tape, glow sticks, electroluminescent wire, or a flashlight to make costumes more visible.
According to the NHTSA, Halloween also typically sees a surge in drunk-driver-related traffic accidents. As always, the first step in preventing drunk driving is to never be a drunk driver. Have a designated driver, use a taxi service, or have a place to crash for the night.
