Toyota finds itself listed among tech-industry giants like Amazon, Facebook, and SpaceX on this year's 50 Smartest Companies by the MIT Technology Review. Toyota was one of only two automakers to make the list (the other was Tesla Motors, which is pretty good company when it comes to innovation).
"We're very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world," said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota North America. "Toyota's scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all. In the spirit of kaizen, Toyota is committed to improving every day in the service of our customers and society."
MIT Technology Review cites Toyota's recent $1 billion investment in A.I. research and robots with the Toyota Research Institute (which, full disclosure, operates in collaboration with MIT), and the hydrogen-fueled Toyota Mirai as standout points earning the automaker a spot of the list.
Toyota was also awarded 1,636 patents in 2015, more than any other automaker.
